Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is speech therapy?
A. Speech therapy is the treatment, support and care given to a child that has difficulties communicating, understanding communication, feeding or swallowing. Speech therapy is given by professionals called Speech Language Pathologists.

Q. How do I get my child referred for speech therapy?
A. The first step would be to either get a speech screen completed or to schedule a visit with your child's primary care physician to begin the referral process.

Q. My child was just referred by his doctor, what now?
A. We know this experience is new to many parents and we are here to provide any support throughout the process. Once your child is referred, you will receive a phone call from the clinic to schedule your evaluation date and time. Please visit our referral page for more information.

Q. My friend has a child about the same age as my child, but their speech is so different. Does my child need therapy?
A. While each child develops at their own individual rate, there are guidelines or milestones that each child reaches at a certain age. Visit our Speech Development page for more information. You can also call to schedule a screening.

Q. Do you take insurance?
A. Yes. We currently take Blue Cross Blue Shield and SoonerCare (Medicaid). Visit our payment page for more information.

Q. What if I don't have insurance?
A. We provide special rates for private pay patients. Please visit our payment page for more information or give us a call!

Q. How long is an evaluation and what should I expect?
A. Our evaluations are tailored to meet the needs of each individual child and family. They typically last around 1.5 hours.

Q. Do I need to bring anything for the evaluation?
A. Bring your child's insurance card and IFSP or IEP plan if they have one. You can also bring any toy or blanket that may make them feel more comfortable throughout the evaluation.

Q. What happens after the evaluation?
A. At the date of the evaluation, the therapist will go over any testing that was completed during the evaluation and give recommendations on whether or not your child requires therapy. They will also recommend frequency (how many times a week) and duration.  A copy of the finalized report and plan of care will be sent to your child's physician.

Q. How long are the therapy sessions, what do they look like?
A. Therapy sessions are 30 minutes. The therapist will prepare tailored activities according to each child's needs and goals for treatment. After the session, the therapist will communicate with the parents the goals and accomplishments for that day.

Q. How long will my child be in therapy?
A. Each child progresses through therapy at their own rate and according to the severity level of their communication problem. With consistent attendance and support from their family, a child is more likely to graduate from therapy sooner.

Q. My family is bilingual and my child is not speaking like other children in his school. Is it possible that my child is just confused and will eventually catch up?
A. No. A bilingual child does not get confused between languages. If you believe your child is not developing language in either language as they should, then you should consider having a bilingual speech pathologist evaluate their speech and language.
